How Should I Deal with a Noisy Neighbor?

How should I deal with a noisy neighbor?

Everyone has dealt with a noisy neighbor at one stage in their lives. It can be a frustrating ordeal to go through, especially if you need to sleep and to work a lot. Thankfully, there are many ways to resolve this issue.

Step 1: Resolution

The first step is obvious. Talk to your noisy neighbor and explain your situation to him or her. How you do this will dictate how successful you are. For example, it is much better to invite the person over to dinner and explain the situation, as opposed to writing a formal letter.

Do not just leave a note on the door complaining to them. This will just make them resent you. Most neighbors do not actually know that they are noisy, and they do not do it on purpose. So, you can put up a tasteful sign in the corridor or somewhere where it will be seen. The sign text might be about how there is a newborn baby or about how hardworking adults need sleep. The trick is to make it a gentle reminder.

Step 2: Adapt to Your Noisy Neighbor

While no one should have to endure a noisy neighbor, the fact is that we all have to put up with certain things. We cannot expect everybody to act like us. Everyone has different requirements and schedules. Additionally, there are a number of ways to adapt to a noisy neighbor. Consider earmuffs or earplugs to sleep at night. There are also options to soundproof your home. Maybe even use soft music to drown out the noise. You can also adapt your schedule a little. Think about whether you are a good neighbor yourself. You might make noise without realizing it.

Step 3: Contact Officials

If the situation is very severe, you could consider contacting the rental property management or the police. This is the last resort, as you are going to alienate your neighbors. However, if the noise is disturbing a large group of people, it might be the best thing to do. This is especially true if you have tried numerous times to resolve the noise issue. A note from management might work. Generally, however, the disputes should be resolved between tenants. It will lead to a friendlier environment and better relations between people.
