Not a Samsung T-5 - Confirmed by Samsung

I don't know what third party Amazon bought this product from but they should be investigated immediately. 500 GB external hard drive was delivered with 87 MB of space. The drive itself is good but...
This drive is fine for storing your files, but it has a big flaw that almost made me return the 2 that I had purchased, and that is the USB cables they come with.

While backing up and transferring files, without being moved, both drives would become unresponsive and lose connection. I thought it was both drives that were defective and almost declared them garbage. But I decided to try new cables before returning, and I'm glad I did. Both drives now work flawlessly.

So if you decide to buy this drive, you must not rely on the cable it comes with. I advise you to buy a good cable to go with it. For this, I decided to take 2 stars off.

FOR MAC USERS! Working great on my 2012 Macbook Pro
Thanks to Amanda who shared how to format this for a current Mac. Here is a slightly updated version of her instructions:
Open Disk Utilities.
From the View menu, choose "Show All Devices."
Select WD Elements on the left side of the window.
Right click and choose "Erase" from the pop-up menu.
Create a name and choose "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" assuming you have a current vision of OS-X.
It will reformat the drive in about a minute.
I followed these directions, and it was effortless. I am using this as a Time Machine backup disk. I keep it plugged into the USB hub that I connect my computer to when it is on my desk. From reviews, I see that some people have had disk failures, but I also do a cloud-based backup. But that only backs up my most recent version of each file. Time Machine gives me hourly backups for the last 24 hours, so I can recover something I've inadvertently overwritten.

I was using an old Synology 212+ for Time Machine, but after moving, it asked me to reinstall, crashed in the process of doing that, and lost all my data. RAID is useless in that situation. I've thought about buying a newer, faster NAS, but that's expensive, and decided to go this route at least for the time being. Unlike the Synology, which was accessible by WiFi, this won't do backups when I take my laptop away from my desk, but I do my most critical work at my desk in any event.

I bought this rather than the $5 cheaper, newer version because I prefer the rounded corners to sharp edges. The rough surface doesn't seem to show fingerprints, a problem reported by users of the shiny newer version. Amazing that 4TB can fit into such a tiny form factor and be such a reasonable price. I am delighted.

**MAC USERS- TAKE NOTE!
**FOR MAC USERS!! After 2 "failed" drives were sent back, I called customer support to find out why I wasn't able to troubleshoot via any online methods, and get this to work for my mac! Apparently the solution was insanely easy, but I never saw this eeeasy solution online in any of the forums I found. The issue with erasing/formatting for a mac just has to do with the view you have open in Disk Utility. Make sure you go to View > Show All Devices, and then "erase" the top tier drive. Problem solved. **FOR MAC USERS!! Beware Amazon Shoppers -- MY Experience With This Hard Drive & Nightmare Software (photo included)
This is an honest account of what I just experienced:

1. The software required to run the hard drive is on the manufacturer's website but cannot be downloaded until you provide an e-mail address (ok, not a biggie), HOWEVER, before allowing you to access the software, it FORCES you to select the checkbox that you give them permission to e-mail you PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS in the future. That's rather sucky, in my opinion, but wait! That's only one annoying hurdle.

2. The software required to run the password protection software is located on their website and states that it is in English. That file also needs your e-mail and password, which is a random password they've generated and e-mailed to you. I entered the data they generated and sent and downloaded the file from the website. Of course my anti-virus software spits out a warning about it. I ignore the warning and start the download. Well, the installation window that pops up is NOT in English (see photo attached). I can't identify the language and can't figure out how to exit out of the installation with buttons in a foreign language. Frustrated, I go back and recheck the software on the website and download it again, wanting to make sure that it was not my error. Second attempt results in same as first. I don't want to give up since I've already invested far too much of my time troubleshooting and attempt to do an online chat on their Support page. See # 3 next.

3. The online Chat function on their Support page displays a message that there is no Support staff available for my country (the U.S.) at this time. FYI, that was at 11:30am PST that I got that message. (Update: Funny thing is, they responded with a comment on this review SEVEN days later after my posting this. Sorry, but that's too late, so I believe I've been more than fair with my review on this item based on my experience.)

Good luck to everyone else giving this hard drive a try. Hoping the manufacturer gets their act straightened out so other shoppers can avoid this waste of time.

Use it for more than 2 years now and still works
Purchased this in August 2014, and it is now May of 2017. Fortunately it still works and has never given me any problems. the sides where you can attach the USB cord is genius and convenient! I travel with this everywhere, so sometimes it gets bumped on the plane, fall on the cement, etc. so I am lucky that it is shock proof.

I am planning on buying naother, and I highly recommend it!

It just works!
Just love this! I loaded the USB Flash Drive up with photos, mp4 movies, and a bunch of mp3 music - simply inserted the drive into my iPad / iPhone, opened the Y Disk App and was able to play / view any file with ease. Couldn't be an easier way to free up storage on my iPhone or an easier way to bring alone a bunch of videos to watch on long trips. Nice job guys - simple interface, easy to use and manage files.

Super Device Works Well But With Serious Glitch
REVIEW UPDATED 7/6/2017: 4 Stars reduced to 3.
This drive works VERY well, but with serious glitches. As of late April, 2017, SanDisk says it's working to fix its app to address it.
Here's the problem: the app displays only a fraction of the photos you want to copy. You'll scroll through screens of black with only an occasional thumbnail here and there. (See Photo below)

Good news: The photos ARE there. Just tap on the black part of the screen and then more photos under that date will appear. Scroll, tap black, scroll, tap black. More photos WILL appear. It's a pain, but it's a work around. (Side note: It required two live chat sessions online with SanDisk tech support and two more phone calls to finally find a tech support agent who knew about this temporary solution. Not all their agents know about it.)

I went ahead and did a test transfer of nearly 700 photos and videos. They transferred seamlessly in less than 5 minutes. The phone rang in the middle of it and I took a call. The app resumed where it was when I hung up. (Or, maybe it continued in the background.)

UPDATE: Bad News: If you use Auto Backup to backup your iPhone day after day, it jumbles the photos with seemingly random names. Nothing is in order. PLUS: It strips away all GPS Location information out of the metadata. This is a major drawback and the reason I'm lowering my review. It's a complete mess to reorganize hundreds of photos I took on a trip.

Next test: plug iXpand into USB port on my iMac. (NOTE: This is the most difficult USB plug I've ever had. It's VERY difficult to plug into the USB slot.) All the photos were there. Again, it worked just as advertised.

Last test: I transferred some videos from my iMac to the iXpand, then plugged iXpand into my iPhone 6s and the videos played perfectly. (Note: You must view them through the iXpand app.)

The app is easy to understand.

ANNOYANCE: Every single time you plug the iXpand into your phone it will pop up a message asking for permission to communicate with your phone. There seems to be no way to get it to 'remember' that permission and stop that pop-up.
APP NOTE: There are two SanDisk iXpand apps in the iTunes app store. Only "SanDisk iXpand Drive" works with this hook-shaped version of iXpand. There is another app called "SanDisk iXpand Sync" which is for a different model.

Disappointed. It’s faster to boot my computer and run a full backup than to use this unit.
The idea is a good one, but it does not fulfill the promises of the product description. Using on an iPhone 7Plus running latest iOS (11.4). The phone recognized the drive and promoted download of the app. App runs, drive recognized. It’s the actual backing up of my photos (which is why I bought this) where the unit fails miserably. The full backup acted like it was happening, but had copied no photos after it said it was complete. Ran it again, copying 756 photos. 20 minutes pass of leaving the app active (can’t leave the app...if you do it pops up a notification reminding you to return to the app so it can run the backup) still no progress.
So I tried to just download 2. It took almost 3 minites, but it downloaded 2.
At this point I removed the unit, reatarted my phone and tried again. No difference.
It is faster to turn on my computer and back up my photos there than it is to use this unit.
I’m going to surf Sandisk support to see if I find any options, but likely Inwill return this for refund. Disappointed also because I have always liked Sandisk SD cards and flash drives; they failed on this product though.

Doesn't Work With iPhone X
Bought this for my iPhone X, plugged it in, but kept getting a "Failed to Connect" message. I got on SanDisk's online chat and after a half-dozen pointless (as it turned out) questions, the technician told me this was a known issue and to return it to Amazon for credit. Well, it works fine with my iPad Mini and with my wife's iPad Air so I'm going to keep it. I've been buying SanDisk products for as long as they've been around and this is the first time I've ever been disappointed. If you own an iPhone X, don't make the same mistake I did. This thing works
Going backpacking where there is no wireless or wifi, and my iphone 5 has only about 5 Gb of available storage, so I needed something to back up my photos so that I could delete them from the phone to recapture some storage space and take more photos.

The device arrived today and I tried it out.

I backed up 500 photos and 1 15-minute video.....it took about 10 minutes. Newer phone probably works faster. Also took about 3 or 4 minutes to delete all that data from the flash drive. My more normal photo session is a few dozen pictures, and that backs up very quickly, just a few seconds. Capacity of 128 Gb is way more than enough for me.

This thing is really just a thumb drive that fits both the regular USB port on your PC and the lightning port on your iphone and ipad.... PLUS an app that lets you control the thing from your phone or ipad. Perfect for what I needed. I can back up all my photos on the trip, and send them up to the cloud when I get home. I had actually thought about buying a phone with more storage, so this little device saved me a lot of money.

Wish it had a lanyard for attachment to my keychain. Also wish that both the USB connector and the lightning connector could be retracted at the same time. As it is, if you retract one, you expose the other, and if either connector got damaged, it would be a problem for me.

Impossible to use. Waste of time and money. Questionable ethics.
Totally NOT user friendly. No instructions. Impossible to use. What I wanted was to be able to just stick the stick in, move photos to the stick, take the stick out, and view the photos on my laptop. No such luck. Worked one time on only half the photos from my iphone. Now it's not working at all. Says it's saving the photos but when you check there's nothing there. AVOID! Oh, and in the box comes an offer that they will send you another one for free if you write a good review on Amazon and send them proof (screenshot). I did that just to test it, of course they never sent the free one. What a scam to earn good reviews. Buyer beware Totally NOT user friendly. No instructions. Impossible to use. Buy it - Not hot, no encryption, Single Drive model works well
This review is about the SINGLE DRIVE 8TB version of the WD MyBook. Green & white cardboard box, black plastic drive case. No Encryption. Go ahead & buy it, it is ok. :-)

SPEED: The drive is faster than I expected. It took about 1 day to copy 5.14 TB to it via USB 3. Those were mostly music files 3MB to 60mb plus some videos. I did not time it or watch it closely. You can easily play movies or music from this drive without skipping.

HEAT: the drive did NOT get hot. Not even very warm while chugging away for almost a whole day relentlessly copying over 5 TB of data. The drive has vents on the 2 ends. You are supposed to put the vent side up, so the heat can exit. That means the drive will be standing on end, which is probably not how you were going to place it. There are rubber feet on the other end. I suspect that the people who said this drive runs hot did not stand the drive up as intended. You can not stack these drives, but you could stand several next to each other.

ENCRYPTION: There is NONE. That is GREAT news. I had heard that the drive was married to the case by hardware encryption. Without getting in to the reasons why that is a terrible idea, I'll just say that we don't have to talk about encryption here, because there is isn't any and that is fine. Before doing anything else, we reformatted as HFS+ for Mac, then copied over 5 TB of data.

I can tell you that if you remove the drive from the plastic case and pop it into a SATA "toaster" or other external sata case it works. The data is still there and useful. Yay! There are a lot of reviews saying that the drive will not work if removed from the case (unless reformatted), but I'm telling you it does work & all data is preserved. Maybe they did not reformat before starting a or maybe they have the dual-drive raid version. This means that if the case ever fails, you CAN put the drive into a different case & run with it as is. Great news!

NOISE: there is some vibration when the drive is running. A very low hum. It may or may not bother you There is no fan. The case has rubber mounts & rubber feet which help dampen the vibration. There is some minor vibration while running in the factory case, and also when running in a NewerTech "toaster". Neither vibrations are objectionable unless maybe you are in a recording studio.

CONNECTOR: USB 3 micro B. Just one.

POWER ADAPTER: is rated at 12v dc 1.5 A. Does not block multiple outlets in use, but it does protrude to the side. There may be a ferrite bead around the cord, near the end.

WHATS INSIDE THE PACKAGE: The drive, a warranty statement, USB to USB 3 micro b cable and power cable. Some packaging and a Need Help? card directing you to support.wd.com/contact No software is included, unless it was on the drive, which came formatted as ExFAT, but we reformatted it to HFS+ which is normal for Mac.

NO ACTIVITY LIGHT: I can hardly believe WD cheaped out by not providing an activity light. Weird, I wish it had one, but for the price/performance I'm not going to change my rating.

NO POWER SWITCH. No big deal. There is a wall-wart which isn't that bad. Does not hog more than 1 power outlet.

WHAT"S INSIDE the case: a single 8 TB WD drive (128MB cache) and a small triangular SATA to USB 3 board. (opening the plastic case is tricky! See how to on youtube & make sure you are looking at late 2016 or after. the case tabs are U shaped, pointing back at you. Very unusual & you are certain to break some tabs off. There are 3 tabs on one side, and 2 tabs on the other side of the same end. The feet end does not have actual tabs. Several credit cards, then Torx 10 and Phillips 2). Drive has a large white sticker. Model WD80EZZX. Rated at 5V 440mA, 12V 550mA DC. No jumper pins and no place for them. The bare drive feels pretty heavy compared to lower capacity drives. No software was included unless it was on the disk, which we ignored and reformatted for Mac.

All in all, I'm happy with this drive so far. At current price it is a real value and seems faster than a 'back up drive'. I'll update this review if my opinion changes, but this 8TB single drive is a Buy.

Does not pass WD diagnostic tests out of the box....
Just got it this afternoon. I have learned from bad experience that it is critical to test hard drives when you get them.
I ran the WD Diagnostics and it hangs at 10%. I then ran WD Lifeguard short test, and it failed that test, with error Checkpoint =97 did not complete smart test. However, the smart test by itself is OK.

My computer also rebooted doing these tests.

Will do some further tests and I contacted WD, but looks like this is going back.

How many minutes of video can you transfer?
Well it was easy to install. Can’t speak to durability yet. As for ease of use, I have a problem. The problem is conversion of data into useful information. The hootoo can transfer a video file of up to 4 GB no problem. But no more (unless you want to reformat the hootoo- but then it might not work on a tv, although it will work on a computer). So filming at 60 frames per second in 1080 HD on an iPhone 7+, a minute of video is 90 MB. Ah, the math gives me a headache. I think 4GB is 44 minutes of video. I am a working musician. A job is called a gig. Maybe when I Told them I had a gig I gave them a headache too. It is an interesting world I live in. Anyway, I am still emailing support. Soon, we will be on a first name basis and I will have to bake cookies for them. Support is very nice, though. Back to my situation though, 28 minutes of video transferred very nicely. 59 minutes failed to transfer, as did 1 hour and 59 minutes. I just wanted to know how many minutes of video would transfer seamlessly. I would have read the directions, but there weren’t any. Just plug and install the app and do it. Blazing speed, and great value
I already have a iXpand Sandisk drive so my comparison will be with the same.

Speed: HooToo is the winner here, much faster than the SanDisk Drive
Build: The Sandisk drive has a bend around the bottom, whereas Hootoo is just a simple flash drive like device, so again chances of the SanDisk drive breaking are more, so Build wise again Hootoo is the Winner here.
App: Its a Tie, the interface of the Sandisk drive is cleaner, but both the App's do what the expectations are.
Longevity: SanDisk makes its own drives from the Flash it makes, and Hootoo does not, not sure who is the actual Flash maker here, so SanDisk wins here

The only reason I am rating HooToo 4 instead of 5 stars is : When you backup and view your images , they do not maintain the same name as the as the original, but is in a Random Hex number combination which makes it impossible to spot the file you need. This should and can be easily fixed.

Great iPhone Back Up Device. Save iCloud Monthly Payments
This device is very handy for backing up an iPhone and transferring the files to your PC as one end has a lightning port and the other end has a USB port. The iPlugMate app makes backing up the iPhone it simple. You just insert the device and select what you want to backup. It will backup photos, music, video, contacts. You can back up everything on the phone at once, or individually select what you want to backup. The iPlugMate app stores the files organized in folders or you can go directly to the files by categorized icons. Once your files are stored on this flash drive from your iPhone, you can insert this flash drive's USB end into your PC, and it will transfer the files at fast 3.0 USB speed to your PC if your PC's USB port is 3.0 rated. This device also can save the cost of paying a monthly fee for iCloud. The one that I got, which is the largest one TaoTronics makes for an iphone has 128gb of storage which is more than adequate storage for me. SunValley also stands behind their products 100 percent. Failed after a Month - Return with Toshiba a Real Burden and Under Value
I bought this based on the reviews and it went bad shortly after the Amazon return time expired. I figured it wouldn't be a problem so I called up Toshiba for a replacement and while the person handling the call was fine the process is horrible. I have to send in the replacement at my cost and in 5-7 weeks they'll send me a visa card with an amount on it based on their valuation. And the packing instructions are extremely strict forcing additonal packing costs . So I'm out 52.45 for the unit, about a $1 for packing materials and 7.15 for the shipping an maybe just maybe I'll get a gift card in 5-7 weeks from now at a yet to be determined value.

I don't judge companies when things go wrong, but I do judge them on what they do when it does go wrong. In this case it is hardly worth the effort and for the replacement I'll look elsewhere.

Glacially slow. Returned it.
It shouldn't take several seconds to backup a 4-megabyte photo. So I recorded how long it took to write a thousand files, each containing 100 megabytes of random numbers. For comparison, I did the same thing on the old Acorndata drive that this Canvio was bought to replace, and here are graphs showing the differences (mind the different vertical scales). Writing to the old Acorndata never took so much as 5 seconds, while writing to the Canvio took over 20 seconds about 1% of the time, and once took over 80 seconds. (The mean times were 2.8 seconds for the old Acorndata and 3.7 seconds for the new Canvio.) If you Google "why is my canvio so slow" (without the quotation marks), you'll see that other people have this same problem. It shouldn't take several seconds to backup a 4-megabyte photo. EXTREMELY SLOW WRITING SPEED
Are you a creative? Edit video? Need a back up or external working drive? Don't buy this.

Example:
85 GB on another USB 3.0 Seagate Drive: 13 minutes. On this drive? 1.5 hours.

Get the Back Up Plus instead. I just wish the item description of this product included writing speeds. It just says "Fast Transfers"

Don't do it
Don't do it. Like many other buyers, I was lured into the Seagate trap because of the phenomenal pricing. Don't do it. Although super light and portable, this hard drive is a piece of rubbish should you jolt, shift, or move the drive without the care of a piece of glass. After two weeks of decent use, the drive crashed on me in the middle of an upload. Then my PC wouldn't recognize it.

This would all be fine if there was a quick and easy fix for the problem but that would be too simple for Seagate. Instead, I searched through scores and scores of articles, forums, downloaded and installed various drivers to try and remedy the solution...hell, I temporarily became an IT technician in my attempt to restore this hard drive and recover my files. Seagate reps weren't particularly helpful and kept pointing me to articles on their site that I'd already read and found useless for solving the issue. Finally I realized that the amount of time I spent troubleshooting this issue, I could have spent editing my footage.

So I cut my losses.

Thankfully I had backed up my precious footage on a large flash drive that doesn't crash. So I got a refund, purchased a WD drive and haven't looked back since. This review is for the potential buyers like me who tend to ignore negative reviews with the thought, "It probably won't happen to me." Yes, I thought that, and unfortunately, I was wrong.

I would happily destroy it upon receipt of a new replacement
I accepted delivery of a Seagate Backup Plus Hub 6TB External Desktop Hard Drive Storage STEL6000100 from Amazon.com on December 20, 2017. For a period of about 30 days it performed as expected. Quiet and dependable. However, beyond that point, my HP Pavilion Desktop 570-p094 running on Windows 10, failed intermittently to recognize the drive. Upon restarting my computer, the problem seemed to self rectify. This condition persisted for several weeks. Lamentably, shortly thereafter, the drive began making grinding and chattering noises. After which point, my computer no longer recognized the drive. I have attempted to utilize "SeaTools for Windows" to no avail. It also failed to detect the drive. Additionally, I unsuccessfully attempted to initialize the drive with any of the available USB ports on my computer. The drive is neither detected within the Device Manager nor Disk Management.
I have had several rounds of emails with Seagate Support which ultimately concluded with the recommendation of returning the drive for replacement. Seagate stipulated though, as follows: "Please be advised, Seagate may replace your product with a product that was previously used, repaired, and tested to meet Seagate specifications." Not much comfort there, considering that the new unit that I purchased presumably also met Seagate specifications. I do not find it acceptable that I should have to front the cost of return shipping. Nor do I feel any confidence in the security of my personal data contained on the drive should I return it to Seagate. The only resolution that I would find acceptable would be to have Seagate send a new drive to replace the doorstop that I now own. I would happily destroy it upon receipt of a new replacement. But then there is the reality of the personal data that is now lost.

I do not write reviews. However, to this I am making an exception due to the sudden, complete, and catastrophic failure of this drive. As a consequence, I have lost irreplaceable photos and documents. Common wisdom advises the back up of data. This was precisely my reason for the purchase of this drive. I backed up the internal hard drive of a computer that I recently whiped and discarded. Back-up the back-up the back-up? Where does it end?

Do a bit of research before buying this product. You will find independent reviews that determine that some Seagate products are unreliable, defective, and (fail) prematurely at spectacularly, and in many respects, unprecedentedly high rates. That is most certainly true of this product. At the time that I am writing this review, nearly 150 of the 1,151 Amazon customer reviews are solidly negative. This drive should stop shipping until the manufacturing defects are corrected.

Every component of my budget system operates flawlessly with the exception of this pathetic device.

Please read the warranty and take the negative reviews seriously.

This drive should stop shipping until the manufacturing defects are corrected.

Every component of my budget system operates flawlessly with the exception of this pathetic device.

Please read the warranty and take the negative reviews seriously." See less

A must-have!
My laptop storage was almost full recently and since I take a lot of pictures, download a bunch of songs and PowerPoint slides for school, I decided to purchase an external hard drive to store important documents and pictures. I got the 320 gb Kesu external hard drive, and it was the best decision ever. It was so easy to transfer the files into the drive (you literally just plug in the usb into your pc laptop and you just drag the files into the usb folder)!! I think everyone should invest in an external drive and I love how affordable these are! One downside is that I wish the usb cord was longer, but other than that, I’m very satisfied with this purchase! Works Great!
The drive works great and couldn't be easier to use. Plug and play does all the setup for you so it pretty much works right out of the box! At just under 5" x 3.75", the drive is pocket-sized making it easy to take with you anywhere. Some reviewers are complaining that the drive stopped working after it was dropped... This is the case with any hard disk drive. My experience with using the drive I was sent has been great. Good transfer speeds, quick setup, and very reliable. Definitely recommend! I love the Picture Keeper
I love the Picture Keeper, but didn't realize I had to buy a separate cable for it to get the pictures from my phone. I love the Picture Keeper, but didn't realize I had to buy a separate cable for it to get the pictures from my phone." See less

Works fantastic for Mac as BOTH a Time Capsule backup drive AND extra storage drive (I split it into two 1 TB partitions)
This is a great little backup AND storage drive I am using for my iMac (mid 2011 model). I only have USB 2.0, so the speeds are not lighting fast, but I use my local drive in my Mac for the documents I am currently working on (primarily music projects using Logic Pro X).

I am using a 2TB size, and since I only have a 500GB (0.5TB) drive in my Mac, I only need about 1 TB of space to be able to provide plenty of backup space and history (and probably not that much). So if I ONLY had wanted to use it for the Time Capsule application, just the 1TB would have been fine.

But on the Mac it is VERY easy to partition the drive into two separate drives. Just Google the topic for detailed instructions, but basically you just plug in the drive (using the included USB cable), go to your Disk Utilities application, add a partition (I just split mine into two 1 TB drives), then go to Time Capsule and pick one of the partitions to use, and you are done - literally took me less than 10 minutes from start to finish, and I'm a relatively new Mac user.

So I now have two drives that show up on my desktop: one for backup / Time Capsule, and the other as just a giant 1TB storage area. The drive runs off of the USB power supply, so for performance and power reasons you probably should run this drive directly from a USB port coming from your machine (versus a hub). Overall I am very happy - this is a great piece of mind AND extra storage area for the money.
